We are all pretty familiar with Skype here at HDA, it is relatively easy to access and can easily be used by anybody(most of the time). THere is no denying each has its positive and negatives. I've seen a lot of people apprehensive about the Discord trial, so I've written this brief run down of the Discord features & lingo and how it relates to Skype. Please be aware that this is a trial, if you have never used Discord before you should make an account and try it out so you'll know what we'll be talking about, we may be getting feedback and opinions on the Discord system in the future and to give an accurate and informed opinion you need to try it out! What is Discord and why is it better than Skype? Discord was originally created for gamers, so they could communicate easily through a platform if the game they were playing didn't have a particular chat function, and while today all types of people use it, the gamers are still its target market. Those that play MMOs, fighters and shooters will most frequently use the Discord services. Because Discord was created for gamers, there are a lot of extra features that we don't find in Skype (Skype I would say is mostly used by people in business). Since Skype is more formal there are less features than there are in Discord. Some features in Discord include bots, reactions, gif integration and a more secure network to communicate. So... how does it work? When you first open up skype on the left hand side (in the desktop app at least) you see all the group chats and 1on1 chats you are currently apart of, and your chat history. In Discord the chat function is structured differently. In Discord Servers are groups of people and chats that are combined to create one large network. Think of every single official HDA chat you are included in (Official, Social, divisional chats) combined into one Server. The server is then broken up into different chats(the normal chats we all know and love in Skype), which certain people can access depending on their Role. A Role basically limits what you are able to do in Server chats and what chats you can access in a Server. Think of Roles like the administrator/moderator/speaker in a skype chat, where some people have the right to kick and add people to the chats and others don't. In HDA the roles you have depend on what rank you are in HDA. In the image above, Server Icons can be seen on the far left hand side, next to the Server Icons are the chats in the server you have selected, in the middle you can see the actual chat taking place, and on the far right hand side you can see a list of members in that chat, ones that are online, offline and administrators. For now, access to the official HDA Discord chat is closed to those in BoD+, but that shouldn't stop you testing it out, I know many people have created their own servers and are using Discord to test it out.
